For most first-time visitors, Sultanahmet is easiest for major historic sights, Galata/Karakoy/Beyoglu is better for evenings and mixed itineraries, and Kadikoy works well for repeat visitors or travelers who want the Asian side.
Choosing a base
Istanbul has no single perfect area. The right base depends on whether you care most about historic sights, food, nightlife, ferries, family comfort, or airport convenience.
Sultanahmet reduces friction for the classic first day. Galata, Karakoy, and Beyoglu make evenings easier and sit between several useful transport links. Kadikoy is excellent for food, markets, and a less tourist-heavy stay, but it adds crossing time to old-city days.
Planning Choices
- First historic trip
- Sultanahmet or nearby Fatih. Best for early access to major sights; quieter at night.
- Balanced base
- Galata, Karakoy, or Beyoglu. Good for restaurants, ferries, nightlife, and cross-city movement.
- Local-feeling base
- Kadikoy or Moda. Great food and evenings; less convenient for repeated old-city sightseeing.
