Orientation

Istanbul is easier to plan as a set of linked decisions: choose a base, understand the ferry/metro/tram map, group the big historic sights, leave time for food and neighborhoods, and keep airport routes separate from everyday transport.

First-Time Priorities

  • Pick a base before building an itinerary; travel time changes quickly between Sultanahmet, Beyoglu, Kadikoy, and the Bosphorus.
  • Use ferries and rail where possible, and treat taxis as a fallback rather than the default.
  • Group sights by area instead of crossing the city several times in one day.
CityKB structure: every city uses comparable pages, so travelers can scan planning, transport, attractions, food, costs, safety, and day trips in the same place.

Arrival Notes

Istanbul has two main airports for visitors: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) on the Asian side. Check the airport, landing time, and hotel area before choosing metro, shuttle, taxi, or private transfer.

Local Rhythm

Historic areas work best early in the day, ferries are part of the experience, and evening plans are usually easier when grouped around Beyoglu, Karakoy, Kadikoy, Besiktas, or a Bosphorus-side neighborhood.
